About Breast Implant Removal

Although all of the breast implants we use (manufactured by Mentor) have a lifetime guarantee, generally the aesthetic appearance of a breast augmentation lasts up to 15 years. You may wish to, or have been advised to have yours replaced. On rare occasions some women suffer complications such as capsular contracture, and so the capsule needs to be released and the implants replaced.

+ What will happen during my treatment?

Depending on the type of procedure you are having, the operation should take between 1-2hours to complete in theatre. This is always carried out under a general anaesthetic, and again depending on the type of procedure you have, you will require a day admission, or overnight stay in hospital.

During the procedure, the implant will be removed through an incision underneath the breasts. This cut is made along the original scar line of the initial breasts. This cut is made along the original scar line of the initial breast augmentation procedure, to avoid creating new scars. Once the old implants have been removed, new ones can be inserted. The wounds will then be stitched and dressed.

Please refer to our breast uplift page if you would like further information about this procedure.

Following the surgery, you will be required to come back to the clinic after one week for a dressing removal or change, and a chalk up to ensure everything is settling. It is recommended that you take two weeks off work to allow for recovery and you will be able to return to light activities within a couple of weeks.

Following the implant removal / replacement, sometimes a breast uplift is required due to the loss of shape and also skin laxity that occurs with age.

Sometimes this is obvious before the implants are removed /replaced and so the uplift procedure can be carried out at the same time.
