MOLE REMOVAL

Moles are pigmented areas of skin which are generally present from birth, but some can develop or change in size / shape as we get older. If the mole is particularly large or in an obvious place, this can cause people to feel self-conscious and, in some cases, can result in teasing or bullying.

Sometimes moles can become itchy and raised, which can catch on clothing etc., causing them to bleed and become unsightly. If you have a lesion that has changed in size, shape or colour, we always recommended you get this checked over. In these circumstances the mole can either be fully removed and sent away for histological testing, or a biopsy without removal can be carried out in the first instance, so that a diagnosis can be made.

+ What will happen during my treatment?

Mole removal is a minor procedure that is always carried out under a local anaesthetic. The removal of one mole takes approx. 15 minutes in theatre and you can go home almost straight away after the surgery.

The exact technique used will depend on the size and location, but moles and larger lesions are usually removed with a scalpel, the wound closed with stitches and then covered with a dressing.

The dressing will be removed after one week and the scab will fall off after a couple of weeks.
