EYELID SURGERY OR EYEBAG REMOVAL

Eyelid surgery (or blepharoplasty) is performed to remove excess skin and rejuvenate the appearance of the eyelids. Excess skin of the upper eyelids causes hooding, often resulting in the lid resting on the lashes. This can give both the appearance and feeling of tiredness. In some extreme case, this can affect the vision.

Excess skin in the lower eyelids causes the appearance puffiness, and again tiredness.

Blepharoplasty surgery creates a more open, youthful appearance of the eyes.

+ What will happen during my treatment?

Upper blepharoplasty involves an incision being made along the natural crease of the eyelid, meaning the scar is barely perceptible. The excess skin and sometimes a small amount of fat is removed and then the area sutured. This is generally performed under local anaesthetic and takes approx. 30 mins in theatre. You can go home an hour or so after your procedure.

Lower blepharoplasty involves an incision being made just along the lash line and takes approx. 45 minutes in theatre. Again, the excess skin and sometimes fat is removed and then the area sutured. This tends to be performed under general anaesthetic due to its position, however you can still go home following surgery on the same day.

If you have upper and lower blepharoplasties performed at the same time, this is always carried out under a general anaesthetic. The procedure lasts approx. 1 ½ hrs and you generally require an overnight stay in hospital.

The stitches are simply removed at one week following surgery, and any bruising and swelling tends to have settled after a couple of weeks.
